Victoria’s Creative Free Jazz Trio BMY has been around for 3 years. They regularly perform at UVic in the “Room” as well as shows at The Church of Truth in Victoria, and Pats Pub in Vancouver. BMY believes in creative improvisational composition.
Meet the Band
Dr. Patrick Boyle is a fearless sonic explorer driven by discovery. Curiosity is his compass. His frontiers are in performance (trumpet and guitar), improvisation, composition and education. Patrick is Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Victoria
Patrick concerts and compositions have been performed on numerous CBC radio broadcasts, including The Signal, Canada Live, The Performance Hour, Deep Roots, and a feature episode of Sessions in the Old Town for CBC-TV with host Tom Power. His latest release, After Forgetting (2017), is a new vinyl release with Bill Brennan (piano), Mike Downes (bass), and Mike Billard (drums) and produced by Glen Tilley.
Patrick balances a life in performance with dedicated scholarship and active community engagement. He holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts (2012) from the University of Toronto, a Masters Degree in Ethnomusicology (2002) from York University and a Bachelors Degree in Performance from Memorial University (2000). His innovative research investigates how improvisation, particularly collective improvisation in organizations, can help negotiate situations of tension and anxiety.
George McFetridge is a native Edmontonian and longtime mainstay of the Edmonton Jazz Scene. George went from the University of Alberta to Berklee School of Music in Boston and then a stint with the Buddy Rich Big Band touring the USA. He settled in Toronto for a time with TV gigs and a teaching position at Humber College (1985-92). During his stay in Toronto he was a co – founder of Unity Records, a cooperative that enabled many Canadian Musicians such as Mike Murley, Barry Elmes, Bernie Senensky and others to reach a wider audience.
He has performed with many well known artists such as Fraser MacPherson, Woody Herman, Benny Golson, Lee Konitz , Kenny Wheeler, Woody Shaw, Phil Woods and many more, and has toured Europe with Jacek Kochon and Mariusz Kwiatowski. Presently based out of Vancouver George has been leading the quintet Strange Weather (with Dave Say on sax, Steve Holy, bass; and Bernie Arai on drums) and the quartet YT with Say, Arai, and Alan Penfold on trumpet.
James Youngis a Canadian Juno Nominated Recording Artist, Bassist and
Composer.
His professional career, spanning over 50 years, includes playing and recording
with many world class musicians. He has played with Holly Cole, Lenny Breau,
Phil Nimmons, Julius Hemphill, Lee Konitz, Roscoe Mitchell, Sam Rivers, to name
only a few.
James is a classically trained musician who holds a University degree from the
University Of Alberta, and has received many scholarships to the Banff Centre
of Fine Arts. He was a featured guest performer at the Berkeley School or
Music, as well as touring Europe with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra.
